Introduction

In 2025, following a comprehensive and positive evaluation of the performance and achievements of the UNESCO Chair in Environmental Education at Payame Noor University by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the organization issued an official letter of appreciation and approved the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding for this Chair for a third consecutive four-year term (2025–2029), under the continued leadership of Professor Seyyed Mohammad Shobeiri.

History

Because of the need to develop and advance environmental knowledge and culture in the country, Payame Noor University, the first university in Iran to do so, began designing and implementing environmental education courses at the master's level in 2007, as well as a specialized doctoral course in environmental education in 2011 and as of now more than 800 masters and 50 doctoral students have graduated from this field of study at Payame Noor University.

Goals

In this day and age, the key to the success, survival, and all-around development of global societies lies in preserving the environment. Even though the approach to the environment might be different in various communities with regards to underground resources, weather, forests, pastures, etc. they are at the same time locally, regionally, and globally linked, which requires efforts, awareness, and national and international education to maintain and develop.
