Learning City Workshop - Yazd Environmental Education
his workshop was jointly organized by the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO Chair on Environmental Education. The instructors of the workshop included Dr. Fakhri (learning city) and Dr. Haghighi (environmental education). Workshop was attended by mayors of different district, deputies and university professors, managers and experts from Environmental Protection Organization, Radio and Television Organization, women sports officials, etc.
Dr. Fakhri, as the representative of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, introduced UNESCO, objectives and missions of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and its departments, and emphasized the role of educational measures in the field of environmental education. She also spoke about the network of creative cities, the characteristics of creative cities and creative cities of Iran. Then, by introducing the network of learning cities as another important activity of UNESCO, she discussed the history, backgrounds and characteristics of learning cities and introduced the learning cities of Iran. Finally, she explained the strategic plan of UNESCO for learning cities in six parts, including:
- Planning,
- Involving partners
- Organizing events
- Citizens’ access to education
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Use of human and financial resources and equipment at cities
In the second part, Dr. Haghighi, on behalf of the UNESCO Chair on Environmental Education at Payame Noor University, spoke about education, as an important component of learning. She also discussed the reasons for the relevance of the learning city to environment and emphasized the need for environmental education.
